PTSD: Why isn’t the focus on Post Traumatic Growth?

topic-civil-society

There is a stigma around Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that begins with labeling the diagnosis as a DISORDER instead of an injury. And what about the millions of people nationwide that have this “injury” and with compassionate understanding and communication, would possibly come out from behind their wounds?

Could society begin to shift the trajectory of thought around psychological trauma, depression and substance abuse? Wouldn’t it be just as easy for the media to highlight the growth a person can realize, so they step into the help they may be avoiding due to stigma?

Fact’s that may surprise you:

  • 8 million Post Traumatic Stress cases per year*
  • 10% of women will develop PTSD in their lifetime
  • PTSD can last years or be lifelong
  • Anxiety – Costs the U.S. more than $42 billion a year
  • Depression – 14.8 million American adults, 6.7 % of the population age 18 and older*

Post Traumatic Stress can affect anyone, anywhere and crosses all socio-economic lifestyles and culture. Symptoms often show up in feelings of decreased self-worth, numbing and being alone. Often out of touch with how they feel and just allowing the momentum of life to move them through. Basically a deep knowing of who they are and have found their own methods to cope with fear and doubt and shame hidden sometimes over a lifetime. Could this be you or someone you know?

It’s often disguised under someone with great potential but they don’t reach for it! Eventually, hope is lost under the veil of who they’ve become and they don’t feel they have choices left or the ability to make a change in their life. It’s time to remove the stigma in society around depression and anxiety and instead address what we can do about it. The first step is to recognize contributing factors so that we can replace stigma with compassion! Post Traumatic Stress, Depression, Anxiety & ADHD to name a few labels, are responsible for holding back human potential in our world!

5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT A WOMAN’S SHELTER!

Feeling scared, alone or just confused and want to talk?

You know something is wrong, and life hasn’t turned out the way you expected it to be. Family and friends, think everything is fine. You’ve mastered keeping up appearances. But the “issues” seem to be getting worse. Maybe you even feel afraid but nobody knows and if you could just find someone to talk too it would help. Somewhere inside, you know, this can’t go on…..

No matter where you are in your life, if you can “think it, then it is possible!”

You don’t have to be battered on the outside to warrant seeking & deserving a better life.

  • Women’s shelters have a systematic filter to protect women and will “assist” you in creating a plan by assessing your personal risk of danger and provide support before you ever leave.
  • Once inside, a shelter has resources to help and support you to begin again. You are given the opportunity to accept your changing life and take small steps toward goals and self-care within a safe space.
  • Concerned about your pet(s) Resources through https://awionline.org/safe-havens, and HumaneSociety.org as well as discussing this on the hotline, it’s all CONNECTED!
  • Domestic Abuse can happen to ANYONE and does not discriminate! Neither does a shelter!
  • You will be able to safely use the computers within a shelter and know your not monitored.

Emotional abuse is no less destructive, just because your not battered and bruised doesn’t mean your not abused!

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, “CHANGE YOUR MINDSET” AND KICKSTART THE NEW YEAR!

DSC00566

Are you fed up with carrying around that extra 10 lbs? Maybe theres a health concern or you just want to step up and live the life of your dreams….and losing weight would change EVERYTHING!

You’ve either just nodded yes, or a little voice in the back of your head just told you why “you can’t” for whatever reason. It’s strong and compelling and your challenged to listen to it. But your true desire for a miracle, inspiration or possible new idea, begins a ping pong match in your head….

It’s not the first time. And it’s not your fault….entirely.

You see we all have the inner voice of our subconscious mind. It’s powerful. In fact you might say it controls our decisions and is why you are where you are right now….not only that, it’s why you STAY there!

Statements from your “conscious mind” are the statements you make openly and on the outside. “I will lose 10lb”

The sub-conscious mind is where your “true belief system lies.” It’s where the voices from your past lives, that you formed your opinions of the world and how you fit in it from.

Your actions till now have been in response to the triggers coming from those core beliefs, that created the patterns you currently have.

You must change the action you take when triggered, and create a NEW ACTION RESPONSE, in order to change the pattern that has given you the result you currently have!
10 things you can do right now to develop a new mindset and start a new life.

First:

1- Take responsibility for where you are.

2- Decide to change.

3- Believe you can.

4- Visualize what you want.

5- Commit. Being interested isn’t enough, you must commit!

6- Journal. Your thoughts and feelings. (this will help you begin to see your triggered patterns)

7- Set a goal. Write out your goal and be specific. “I will lose 20 lbs by Feb. 15, 2015.” (state what you want, by when)

8- Create a strategy and plan. (menu, shopping set-up activities i.e. walking, hiking, yoga, gym, etc.)

9- Partner. Find an accountability partner either in a friend or hire a trainer. This can also be a support group if you choose. Family members and those close, although well-meaning can be saboteurs)

10- Action. Begin…and be excited! Visualize yourself throughout the process of where you want to be. Be positive and keep this process to baby steps, chunking down your goals will lead to success. How you look and feel? How do people respond to you?

CHANGE THE TRIGGER RESPONSE TO THAT INNER VOICE, CHANGE THE ACTION YOU TAKE AND YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF IF YOUR BEING STALKED OR TARGETED!

Your Targeted. You’ve lost everything, nothing makes sense, you need help and nobody is listening.DSCN2525

A glimpse of hope.

“IF YOU CAN THINK IT, THEN IT CAN HAPPEN.” SHE SAID.

I wanted to cry, I wanted to jump up and down with Joy. But all I could do was try to think of what else I could tell her that would give her reason to help me, all I wanted now was to be safe. I needed to know the next step. I had no idea what was happening to my stable and secure life, It was falling apart all around me and I was in the center of the storm. I repeated the words over and over again after that day. “If you can think it, then it can happen!” Someone heard me, someone BELIEVED what I was saying, was possible.

IF YOUR IN TROUBLE AND YOU HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO GET HELP, HERE ARE A FEW TIPS THAT WILL SET YOU UP SO THAT SOMEONE WILL LISTEN.

Start a journal. Note incidents that occur, date, time and get names, write them down.

Document. Every detail even if you don’t think it matters.

Take pictures. Immediately download and copy them to different disc drives, computer files and print what you can.

Go to your local police. With real evidence or a witness.

Fill out the report yourself. In your words and ask the officer to sign it. (They may refuse)

Stay in touch with family and friends. See them face to face whenever you can.

Stay positive. Think about things that make you happy.

Don’t let yourself get depressed.

Eat right, exercise and take vitamins.

Trust your instinct. Develop your intuition through that trust.

It’s important to think out of the box. You need to find resources and new friends so reach out to other TI’s….In the past few years they are beginning to connect through the internet. Find them and connect…

Use that instinct and trust that hair raising on the back of your neck. If unsure then don’t share “everything” about your particular situation. Allow it to unfold….in time you will find those that are safe, and you will know it.

DON’T GIVE UP!

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR DOG AND NEVER REGRET IT!

IMG_5523Let’s talk about why you want a dog and then how to choose the right dog for you!

If your reading this I know your probably an animal lover like me. Are you considering getting a dog or perhaps adding a second dog? I’m glad your here.

My reason for writing this is to help you or someone you know make an informed choice so that you can make the right choice. For you, your family but also the dog!

People are always curious about Riley and I. And I often hear compliments and surprise at his calm demeanor and the fact that Border Collies aren’t typically used for Service Dogs. And that would be correct. Riley is the son of a champion Westminster dog by the name of Merlin, with his roots reaching way back in history as to his breeding. That doesn’t make him a better dog than another or change his natural herding instincts in any way. He is a Border Collie through and through. BUT I am an experienced dog owner having owned and raised many dogs over the years.

Think about your family habits and activities before you decide on a breed….your lifestyle and how you have fun matters in your choice of dog. If you are really “out there, extravert, active, etc., ” then the dog you choose should match your personality, style and be a great fit for your family.

Emotions usually rule your choice in choosing your dog.

So let me ask you….would you choose a Jack Russell Terrier if you wanted a quiet, easy to manage lap dog? Consider this scenario…your friends have a great Jack Russell Terrier, and you’ve decided your going to get the very same breed. You’ve heard they’re stubborn, but you don’t care. “That puppy you saw was so darned cute.” But…. Jack Russells were historically used to hunt fox and that dates back to exclusive breeding in England through the 18th and 19th centuries. Did you know the whiter the backside of a Jack Russell, the more valuable they are considered. That’s because they would chase a fox into what they called a “den pipe” and the whiter their backside, the more visible it would be sticking out of the “hole.” So they could be found.

The Jack Russell is stubborn because they were bred to problem solve. It’s in their blood to work! So with information you may not have thought of, at first sight of that cute Jack Russell puppy (or fill in the breed) NOW, would you still choose this if you wanted a lap dog?

What is often described as “stubborn” can just be intelligence misunderstood. It’s important to understand all of the characteristics of the breeds your interested in, because you will get something of those characteristics and will have to deal with whatever comes up through the years you have your dog!

Dogs are as individual as people and come with genetic codes you can’t necessarily fix. And shouldn’t because it’s what gives them their charm and personality. Those unique characteristics to each breed is what people hear about and want. But….to have a great dog, that you can enjoy, that really fits in to your life, you are going to have to “train it” early on, so that…

1) you establish yourself as the pack leader and                                                                                  2) nip those characteristics, that bring the charm, early on!

*Side note: Manners are established young. From the day you bring your new pup home you can begin to train. Of course theres a limit to what your puppy can do and like all babies and toddlers, your dealing with a limited attentions span….but jumping up on you, tugging on your socks, shoes or anything else….if you don’t want an adult dog that does it, then don’t let your puppy!

But let’s get back to the “cuteness” of that puppy you’ve just seen, that’s triggered an emotional response that it may be time to get a dog. It happens to all of us…we see a puppy and get swept up into the moment or a nostalgic memory is triggered and common sense goes out the window. Then again, it may just be the right time.

My concern about choice of breed and understanding what your getting goes back to overcrowded shelters and misunderstood dogs. Even the mixes, are mixed BREEDS and you need to understand what those characteristics are. Shelters are over crowded and depending on where you are in the world, dogs roaming the streets homeless.

I want to tell you how I came to the decision to get Riley. Nothing about Riley is conventional or typical as a service dog goes, but at the time I was a busy active woman, that had no way of knowing I would ever need a service dog.

It started with a dog named CB. I met CB and his owners Keith and Wendy on a recreational field on the big island of Hawaii. I will never forget it.

As we pulled into parking spots next to each other that morning….and that striking dog jumped out of his truck with one thing on his mind…..his ball!

I was immediately drawn in.

I began to ask Keith and Wendy questions about the breed. I expressed how much I loved his intensity and focus on the ball. As I stood watching as intently as CB focused on his ball, Wendy seemed to shrug and tell me why this breed wasn’t such a good idea. But in this moment, I was feeling that dog somehow matched me. Nothing she could say would change my mind or my fascination watching as CB stooped low in position with every throw, to chase his ball. I’d never seen a domestic animal with such intense focus.

I could feel that familiar “joy”. This was a triggered moment, I was the kid in the candy store. Like a magnet to a paper clip.

Without reservation I can remember humorously saying to myself “I’m gunna get me a CB!”

Keith realized my enthusiasm for CB and told me they planned to breed him but hadn’t found the right female, as the island was limited. We exchanged contact information and went on our way. I was going back to my condo to research this breed. And that I did.

My plate was full as a mom, a fitness trainer and most of all my own triathlon training took hours up in my day. I was living my dream life, doing what I loved and I had no business even thinking about getting another dog. At home there were 3 dogs, 4 cats and a parrot waiting for me. AND I lived part of the year in Hawaii, so I was away a lot. But I was fortunate to have my mom living with me, so everyone was cared for and their lives never skipped a beat.

But the force of my intention for this breed was so strong, and I knew a match to me. I began to justify my decision, this would be the perfect training partner…and in my particular case, something wasn’t quite right in my world at the time. I knew it, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Which made considering another dog even more bazaar.

What I share here is the “sudden trigger and intention” however that looks, when you decide to get a dog.

But sadly many of these triggered moments end in a sad story. Somebody falls in love with a puppy that grows up and they can’t keep for one reason or another as the story goes “grew too big” or “became an untrainable monster.” Maybe there was a job transfer and so on.

What blows my mind is that some people forget these are family members. A pet needs to be brought in as you would plan for a human baby. There is nurturing needed and rules to follow, and you have to learn who they are as individuals and make them fit into your life, not the other way around.

IT’S TIME FOR FAMILY PLANNING

Think about your lifestyle. Look ahead 5 even 10 years from where you are now.

What do you see?

Are you married, will you be?

Do you plan on having a family, or do you already have kids? If so how old are they and what does your life look like in 10 years from now?

Do you travel for work or enjoy having the freedom to come and go as you please? If you do travel, do you have someone to take care of your dog? Or will you have daycare costs to think about?

Do you have a yard? It’s fine if you don’t, but you may want to consider the breed and ease of getting to the outside if your in an apartment of condo complex, for instance.

HEALTHCARE                                                                                                                                     There are planned and unplanned costs involved over the lifetime of your dog. Early on it’s the regular puppy exams and shots. But there are yearly’s and things just come up. Riley had one emergency that cost me $2800 initially. But thanks to insurance my out of pocket expense was only $600. So pet insurance.

Flea & tick control, leads me to the topic of….

GROOMING                                                                                                                                       Think about the grooming needs of the breed you are considering.

Who will do the grooming, you?

or will you take them to a groomer? I suggest you look into these costs ahead of time.

THE BREED                                                                                                                                            Look at the characteristics of the breed you are interested in and don’t think you can alter them to fit into what you want. Just as you have the characteristics of your lineage, so do they!

How big will the breed get.

Do you know what you want? Consider the size to your living environment. Think about where you go, the ease of taking your dog or their carrier with you.

All dogs shed, but there are breeds considered to be hypo-allergenic. Like the Schnauzers, poodles, etc. Just like humans, they will lose hair, just not as much. Maybe the hairless Rex is something you want to consider. Did you know they can sunburn? If you live in a warm sunny area, you won’t be able to put them in cute sweaters…so how you manage caring for them is something to think about.

And don’t forget the equipment and things you will need;                                                                       Collar, leash, licensing, a bed.                                                                                                                            A CRATE is something I consider to be an absolute necessity for a puppy. Your crate has to be roomy enough for your dog when it’s full grown. This is the undisputed best way to housebreak you puppy and keep them safe when you are away. It is NOT cruel. Remember understand your breed and dogs in general. In canine language, the crate equates to his “den” in the wild….

RESEARCH……In a nano second, with computers and available technology, you can have all the information you need at your fingertips to understand the breed you are considering.

BREEDERS vs. SHELTERS

I like to stay away from the trendy breeds and designer dogs. (cats too) They come with their own set of problems. The fancier the breed is and new to the canine world, the less we know of inherent problems that could occur….But that is just my personal choice it may not be yours.

Decide what you want in a dog and don’t let someone else decide for you. Know what your needs are and theirs, and plan accordingly. If you know this isn’t the right time for your family to adopt a dog, then don’t. When the time is right, there will be the right dog waiting for you. Just as Riley was Divinely there for me!

THIS DECISION NEEDS TO BE CAREFULLY MADE. YOU ARE ADOPTING A NEW FAMILY MEMBER. MOVING, MISTREATMENT, OR GIVING AWAY A FAMILY PET IS TRAUMATIC TO A CHILD. ONCE YOU MAKE THIS CHOICE, WHAT THIS DOG BECOMES IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. TRAIN IT, LOVE IT AND DISCIPLINE IT. REMEMBER YOUR CHILDREN ARE LEARNING FROM YOU HOW TO NURTURE, LOVE AND CARE FOR THEIR PET.

(Part 2) 4 TYPES OF PTSD – WHICH GROUP ARE YOU IN?

tunnel_wide-d4b8f634e40e113dc68ea83806d748c1c6c320e1-s800-c85

DID YOU KNOW the brain chemistry of a child that has grown up in an abusive household, is actually changed?

When I first heard the statement “that the chemicals in a child’s brain are actually changed when living with domestic violence.” I was sitting around a table with 20 women watching a video on child abuse, actually in a shelter. It was as though somebody lifted a huge hidden burden I’d carried throughout my life that “nothing about my insecurities and low self-worth was my fault!”

TRAUMATIC EVENTS THAT CAN LEAD TO PTSD

  • natural disasters
  • terrorist attacks
  • sudden death of a loved one
  • sudden death or “loss” of a beloved pet
  • rape
  • kidnapping
  • assault
  • sexual or physical abuse
  • childhood neglect
  • war
  • fire
  • car accident

A child that has to focus on survival can’t concentrate, they can’t focus and if they can’t focus they can’t learn. That child can be misunderstood, they may learn to cover up what they perceive as inadequacies in themselves. So they could misbehave or appear shy or just quiet and reserved like I did. I’d say looking back at myself as a child, I can see a little girl that didn’t join in and stayed to myself. I had so much going on in my mind trying to be ok, there was no room for the antics of fun and play from the other kids that seemed to have “normal” lives.

I was shocked when I read there are hundreds of thousands of child abuse cases reported every year. If larger numbers of people understood the real numbers, they just might possibly understand then the prevalence of children with trauma. But it’s not until we have a disastrous school shooting or some other incident and everyone asks, “WHY?”

My childhood wasn’t unlike millions of other kids. In fact every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made involving 6 million children. ** (multiple child homes) With the potential to either have or develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

EVERY ONE OF THOSE CASES AUTHENTICATED, COULD BE A CHILD WITH PTSD OR ONE THAT MAY BE ON THEIR WAY TO DEVELOPING IT.

THIS WOULD PACK 10 FOOTBALL STADIUMS….IMAGINE THAT!!!

Families where there is dysfunction are caught up in a cycle that is secretive and often difficult to see without somebody coming forward. If you see any of these signs in a child you know or something sort of just gnaws at you;

PLEASE DON’T IGNORE IT, REPORT IT!

12 SIGNS OF A POTENTIAL PROBLEM

  • Behaving younger or reverting back.
  • Being unable to talk, zoning out
  • Stomach problems or headaches
  • Refusal to go places or play with friends
  • Sitting off to a side, scanning the room in quiet in a classroom setting or with others.
  • Inability to trust or love others
  • Aggressive, disruptive or illegal activity
  • Anger
  • Clingy or withdrawn
  • Nightmares and sleep problems.
  • Depression or what you perceive as feelings of sadness.
  • Drug and alcohol abuse

THINGS YOU CAN DO

  • Ask them what they are most worried about
  • Provide structure to their activities in meals, homework and bedtime. Knowing what to expect and prepare them for any changes in their daily routines.
  • Express their feelings through drawing or journaling
  • Reduce their exposure to violent media, television, video games and movies.

We rarely get to hear what actually goes through the mind of someone with PTSD, much less a child’s mind and that pathway through adolescence to adulthood. I hope my effort to share with you parts of my life has been enlightening in some way. I’m excited to say that we are living in an exciting time of discovery in medical breakthroughs, with facts about healing the brain, memory, aging of the brain and restoration of brain cells. We know for instance we can actually replace those negative voices or tapes in our head. You know the ones that have kept us stuck or stopping what we start…never really reaching our full potential?

4 TYPES OF PTSD – WHICH GROUP ARE YOU IN?

HeadshotMost likely someone you know has PTSD and may not even know it!

We hear about returning Veterans with PTSD and when a catastrophe strikes like a school shooting or airline crash, you may hear about PTSD because the trauma causing PTSD has taken on a mediagenic focus, with attention to returning Veterans.

PTSD comes with a wide range of mental and physical issues, to the degree that it varies from one person to another. As a woman with PTSD, one of the most difficult things I find myself dealing with is JUDGEMENT. This has lead me to understand that the perception of society is that unless you’ve been through something catastrophic in nature, as perceived through the media as acceptable for a disabling condition; otherwise the assumption is that “this person must be weak or fragile.” Now you add a Service Dog and they are really confused.

I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that I am asked 4 maybe 5 times a week if I was in the military. It’s not that I mind the question, but I am continually surprised and increasingly aware of the need for more education and more studies.

I know, because I have had PTSD since childhood. But I never knew it, and nobody else back then did either. I grew up a child living in terror both real and imagined. Imagined, because in the developing mind of a child with ptsd, they have no measure between what love is and abuse? Children of abuse with PTSD often slip through the cracks educationally and socially.

It is my passion to expose PTSD to the WORLD for thousands of men, women and children actually affected by it, that are not seen and often not heard. This means more awareness to neglected and abused children, at risk adolescents, and women AND men living in domestic abuse. The world would also benefit knowing that a PTSD Service Dog can alleviate symptoms and the need for medication, as it has in my case.

PTSD is not an injury that can always be immediately seen, in fact it develops weeks, months, even years after the traumatic incident(s).

There are different measures of PTSD. It really depends on many factors and the amount of time that a specific trauma lasted as well as the number of incidents.

CLASSIFICATIONS*

  • Symptoms lasting less than 3 months, the condition is considered to be acute PTSD.
  • Lasting at least three months, is chronic PTSD.
  • Symptoms lasting at least 6 months following a traumatic event can be classified delayed-onset PTSD according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) or…..
  • Complex PTSD or CPTSD, is the same diagnosis that returning vets have and is often reported yet misunderstood because it is more intense in nature. Civilians and people that have experienced more intense situations of trauma, combat, held hostage for a period of time, entrapped and mental and physical abuse over a long period of time, could have the more complex diagnosis.

My purpose is to educate and bring awareness to those affected by PTSD, their family and friends. More understanding is needed as to the symptoms, diagnosis and how to better understand themselves and help the healing which in effect also interrupts the natural processes of brain function, memory, mental and physical well-being and ultimately in children, can interfere with their ability to learn. It may even resemble ADD and ADHD as well as a vast number of learning differences.

This is part one of two parts. In part two I will discuss children living in the silence and misunderstood world of PTSD, what to look for and how it can disguise itself. Without help, and with further trauma throughout their lifetime, these children will adapt to the world with self-limiting behavior, and poor choices from diminished self worth….

See you tomorrow!

THE 10-MINUTE PROCESS TO THE REAL SECRET!

nile-river-05

Sure the Law Of Attraction is real and I fully believe in the power of our thoughts, ideas, people and circumstances. Aligned to the Universe, your thoughts create a powerful vibration, giving you the ability to manifest and live the life of your dreams. BUT FOLKS, THAT’S NOT ALL. If it were that simple….

Why isn’t everybody doing it? and….

Why aren’t we all thin, wealthy and abundant?

Or just plain satisfied?

Here is the BIG ANSWER… THE KEY TO THE REAL SECRET…..drumroll……..

Because the KEY TO LIVING YOUR GREATEST LIFE is within yourself. And within each of us is a lifetime of voices in your head of well-meaning family and friends that have told you WHO YOU ARE. Since childhood.

Do you really understand how powerful that is? I don’t care how successful or “not” you feel you are today….most of us have something we would like to change, something that isn’t working in our lives. So why is that? Why don’t we “just do it”…like NIKE says?

Because a lot of it is about worthiness and being enough. Wouldn’t we all like to feel full of life, joyful and take on anything and thrive. Well you can, but you are where you are because of your inner belief system. To change “WHERE YOU ARE” you must first discover WHO YOU ARE!

PAUSE AND HOLD THAT THOUGHT PLEASE….

Did you “hear” something when I made that statement? Did a little voice in your head think of “your battle of the bulge” or “unhappy job, marriage” or did some other “negative thought” creep in?

Maybe you heard “This doesn’t apply to me, I know who I am”….or ….“I can’t” or “he/she won’t let me”, “I’ve tried so many things”, “nobody gets it”….and the “beat” goes on!

Do you know the expression; “Da Nile isn’t just a river in Egypt” The reason for that expression is because the REAL “NILE,” runs through 11 countries, including Africa and Egypt! So it’s looooong, and so are we on owning our truth.

All of this is very real to me because I’ve undergone a full transformation myself. I had to learn through baby steps that many of my battles, those things I thought I was a “victim” of, were actually always in my control to fix. Oh, don’t get me wrong….I’m not one of those that says there are NO VICTIMS….because I know there are victims in the world. I’m a trauma survivor myself, I know. I will always listen to you, but I will always give you the work it takes to throw out that old thinking and see your greatness and potential of who you are.

So here are 5 steps, that if you apply, I promise you will have a shift in your thinking so the Universe can respond and begin to move you in the direction of your “intentional thoughts,” towards your dreams. One last but very important note, I combine my faith with my understanding that ultimately God is the shift behind all things. He has shown me my purpose and “through Him all things are possible.”

It is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL that you begin right now with less than 10 minutes a day, these action steps. Work this process for 66 days, and I promise it will empower YOU on a journey to LOVE WHO YOU ARE, CHANGE YOUR ENERGY AND YOUR LIFE!

  • “LISTEN” to what you say…to yourself, self talk matters! LISTEN, CATCH IT, OWN IT! Then change it into a positive affirmation…”I can’t” becomes, “I have all that I need right now.”
  • Everyday look into the mirror and tell yourself “I LOVE YOU.” It will be uncomfortable at first…but stay with it and pause in your image. Look at yourself and think of what you want to achieve and then repeat “I LOVE YOU.
  • TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for where you are, own every choice you have made in your life. Think about the adversity in your life and see if you can create a new story around it, something about it you can spin positively, even the slightest. Write it down or journal it. Then read it atleast once a day.
  • WRITE 5 small successes before you go to sleep, for THAT day. Something you followed through with, keep it simple. Going to the store when you don’t feel like it, is a success!
  • Start a GRATITUDE JOURNAL and each morning write 5 things you are grateful for.

THATS IT!

I did say I promise, if you do these things faithfully, you will have shifted where you are in your life and be ready for the next step. The REAL SECRET….is learning to love yourself, really love who you are and throw the self limiting thoughts out the window forever. You deserve to live your greatest life ever, and the world needs and wants you to show up in who you truly are. In your GREATNESS and WHO YOU WERE BORN TO BE. And I understand that it takes time to really BELIEVE, to uncover your true POTENTIAL, that which is lying inside of you, longing to get out…..the journey within is a process. But I know you can do it, because I have.

THE SPIRIT OF RILEY

Service Dogs, Hidden Disabilities and PTSD!

Have you ever wondered why someone has a service dog in a vest but you can’t see any obvious reason why? And that dog is really cute but the patch on its vest says; “Do Not Pet”. Most people simply don’t read what the vest says and are overwhelmed by their nature and love of dogs to pet or get the dogs attention. A “guide dog for the blind” is usually very obvious and therefore there is an innate understanding that tampering with a guide dog in any way, could cause their “person” known as “handler,” a problem or injury.  (Yet I’ve personally witnessed a guide dog being distracted and given a treat in a restaurant.) This is highly improper behavior and enough reason to bring compassionate understanding and communication around service dogs in society to the forefront, and highlight hidden disabilities.

The lack of understanding of humanity is largely made up of judgment, opinions and perceptions based on what we see in the media and through television. Society as a whole perceives the strong through appearances, wealth and those that have attained a certain level of status by profession or in life, and those that get the media are of sound mind and body.  Therefore, those with disabilities and particularly mental health issues, are perceived as being weak. Vitality holds the perception, that to have a disability is to look, act or be a certain way. Technology and cyberspace exacerbate the problem of missing compassionate understanding because we now value the speed and rate at which we can achieve and rapidity supersedes ease.

In the case of a “service dog team” there is a natural perception that to use a service dog, this person must be less than capable and an immediate conclusion is drawn one way or another, about the potential for communication rather than an attempt made to engage in conversation at all.

So what happens when a service dog team is out in public and someone wants to pet or distract or ponders why this dog is with this person as a service dog. Some will walk away in judgment of the situation…”She doesn’t look like she has a disability,” or “what is that dog for?” But they rarely ask because they don’t know how to approach given the unfamiliar territory and stigma around disabilities. And then there is always that person that shuns the “team” with disdain under the assumption there is no disability. The responsibility lies in education and awareness, as well as opening the dialogue for compassionate understanding in society, so that a service dog team is garnered with the same respect and awareness as a guide dog team. A service dog is not a pet.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health injury that a person carries due to something that happened to them, yet it carries so much misunderstanding and stigma. Few realize how it manifests or to the degree at which it is held within that individual. And the most fascinating thing to me is that society is largely unaware that there are physiological issues associated with PTSD. Things like chronic and acute pain, balance and mobility, osteoarthritis, memory problems, and numerous medical issues all of which can and are supported by a well trained service dog. But most peoples thoughts are distorted by media stories they have heard and here say that limits perceptions such as the association of PTSD just being a military injury, when there are far more civilians worldwide that have suffered atrocities. The wounds are deeply embedded with many factors that can begin trigger months even years later.

Disabilities come in as many shapes, styles and varied issues as people do. It used to be that we only considered Guide Dogs for the Blind as legitimate working dogs, well not anymore. Today the classification for a service or assistance dog is the same as a guide dog. There are dogs for autism, diabetes or seizure alert, dogs for the hearing impaired, mobility, medical alert and psychiatric service dogs. Under the Psychiatric category there are anxiety disorders and panic issues but there are also physiological issues that can either be present or develop over time. Most commonly known in this category are the dogs often associated in the media for military veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Under this classification most people are unaware that they may very often have dual considerations of anxiety and physical limitations or live in acute pain.

A service dog is a highly task trained dog with specific TASKS for their handler or person that is specifically trained to that persons issues and needs. No matter what the reason is the person needs their dog, they are a teamed partnership and that dog is the equivalent to medication or a piece of “life enhancing equipment” such as a wheel chair, or other apparatus. Those with a service dog, have that dog so they can gain some normalcy back into their life and are given the gift of protection for access under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Think of their dog as a tool, because it is not a pet.

A dog can change the landscape of Post Traumatic Stress to that of Post Traumatic Growth!

So remember, if the sign on the vest says, DO NOT PET; then don’t pet. Do not call, click, or distract a working dog in any way…their persons life depends on it! And most of all, please don’t be offended. (Unless you NEED a dog to get through a day in your life and not just on an airplane…. PLEASE DON’T….you are hurting the disabled community and those that truly need access!)
